When my style guru and friend Angie over at YouLookFab blogged about faux fur vests back in July, my first thought was no way. I could only imagine wearing them in a very bohemian style, and that’s just not me at all. But Angie set me straight and said they had a retro feel to them as well, and could be done up in a very sleek way, which got the wheels in my brain turning. Here are three interpretations of the trend that I came up with.

1. Turtleneck, skinny jeans and boots. This is a cute, more casual way to wear the trend. Ideally, I probably would have like to have some riding boots that are a little more refined, but currently I only have my Docs, so had to use them for illustrative purposes. You could switch riding boots for slouch boots if you wanted, as long as you keep the boots sleek. You could also wear textured hose and a denim skirt with boots in place of the skinny jeans.
2. Black dress, textured hose and heels. This is the outfit Angie described to me which turned me around on faux fur vests. This might be an interesting twist on a traditional black dress for a Holiday Party. My dress has elbow sleeves, since it’s quite warm down here, but if you are in a colder climate, a sweater dress with long sleeves would work just as well.
3. Button down shirt, skinny jeans and heels or ankle boots. This might be nice if you have a party to go to that is a little dressier, but not so dressy you would wear outfit 2. To make this more casual, you could swap the dark jeans for lighter ones and wear ballet flats or mid-calf boots.
In all the outfits, I decided it’s best to keep the other items I am wearing very simple and let the vest be the statement piece. I chose to just wear one or two pieces of jewelry. I kept necklaces long because my vest has a crew neckline and shorter necklaces just made me feel smothered because I had so much going on around my neck. I also realize this is a very trendy look and not for everyone. This is not something I would wear during the workweek, rather I keep it for weekends and going out with friends. I will probably wear the second outfit for Christmas dinner.

Ana! These are great ways to wear faux fur. I used to wear a faux fur jacket in similar ways until I gave away that jacket couple of years ago. This post makes me wanna look for a new faux fur vest.
Oooooh! I love your blog! I’m adding you to my Google Reader right now.
How cute are you in that?! Very, very cute.
I love the faux fur waistcoat, Ana! It’s KILLER. You have to share this look with the forum. They’ll be lots of orbit take-offs I’m sure! I adore all the looks but I LOVE the frock ensemble best :0)
How did your Doc shortening experiment go?
Hey, I liked the post. I recently donated most of my old clothes
